So how did everyone else fare, power-wise?

A transformer blew (sparks, fire, fire truck and everything) close to me, stranding one-half of a block (my half) without power. I've called the power company 5 times and they've given me answers ranging from "we don't know" to "three weeks because you're too small a pocket" to "September 1 if people don't quit to short us manpower for laughs" to "too low priority, go away, call back later".

I'm waiting on time-sensitive government aid stuff I can only do by phone, and since my phone runs through my modem, if it goes, they both go. So yeah, kind of frusterated.

Is anyone else in Albany still without power? Is it just me or is it far more widespread pockets and I don't see the bigger picture? I'm just curious.

twin bridges closed
Check your favorite news source, the twin bridges on the Northway(I 87) between albany and clifton park are closed. Something about a run-away barge or maybe Lock 7 on the Erie Canal being in trouble.

You'll be Shocked to hear that the City of Albany has declared a snow emergency. Tonight 8pm, park of the even side. Tomorrow 8pm, odd side. Check out www.AlbanyNY.com for details and info.

I can't source the info but I remember hearing that the last snow emergency had a decrease in tickets and towings, so keep up the good work passing on the announcements!

Apparently driving erratically near a pulled over police car is the law tomorrow. Statewide.

Ambrose-Searles 'Move Over Act'

Effective January 1, 2011

Protects law enforcement officers and emergency workers stopped along roadways while performing their duties.

Drivers must use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle that displays red and/or white emergency lighting.
On all roads and highways, drivers must reduce speed;
On Parkways and other controlled access highways with multiple lanes, drivers must move from the lane immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle, unless traffic or other hazards exist to prevent doing so safely.

Fine of up to $275, plus mandatory court surcharges
Two points on the driver’s license record

I would have much preferred a media campaign ASKING people to be careful.

drive safe
I'm listening to the police scanner and they're picking people out of ditches every ten minutes and responding to falls and chest pains every five. Take it easy.

Bally's Gym in Crossgates?
Does anyone use this gym? What do you think of it?

Mostly I'm concerned with cleanliness and how well maintained it is. Also, what the gym culture is like. Are the staff/other member polite/annoying/friendly/whatever?

Also, have you taken any of the classes they offer? What did you think of them?

(Cross-posted to my own journal. Sorry if you see it twice.)

Two cats in search of a home
I have unexpectedly come into the responsibility of finding a home or homes for two female Maine Coon cats. One is about 6 months old, and the other is about a year and a half.

What few details I have are in this post in my LJ.

Feel free to pass the link on to anybody you think may be interested.

Local Care Midwifery in Troy Open House this Sunday!
I wanted to let anyone who might be interested know that Local Care Midwifery is sponsoring an open house on October 3rd from 1-5pm at its offices in Troy at 213 Pawling Ave. They are the first legal home birth option for women in the immediate Capital District, and I was very impressed with our experience with Michelle Doyle, the midwife and owner of LCM, during our most recent birth.

So, anyone who is interested in home birth in the Albany area might want to check it out!

Contact Lenses
I need -3.50, base curve 8.6 contacts (will accept -3.75/-3.25)(sterile, unopened), and I will reimburse you cash.

No, I CANNOT actually go to 1800contacts.com and order a pair because they ask for a Dr's name and phone number and I have neither because I have not seen a Doctor in 4+ years and do not actually have a prescription for -3.50s.

The last time I ordered from 1800contacts they turned down my order because they could not get a hold of the Doctor whose number I gave them (it was fake).

Thank you!!

The police would like to remind everyone that walking home alone after a night of drinking is an excellent way to get mugged by a group of people.

*You should not travel alone or walk on dark streets.
*If you are out at a bar or restaurant make sure not to consume too much alcohol which can impact your ability to make sound decisions.
*Don’t display items such as cash, cell phones or electronic items that can make you a potential target.
*If you see anyone suspicious make sure you call police immediately. (438-4000 or 911)
